“A man always knows when he’s not the King to your Queen. ’Fess up, sis.”

~Timeka “Meeka” Simmons~

CHEYANNE

For what it was, the double date hadn’t been that bad. However, it was only because Grey and Genesis were cool people and the four of us got along. The only thing that made it weird as hell was that the fact that Grey flirted with me any chance he got, and Genesis might as well have told the entire restaurant that she was interested in Issac.

Besides that, it was fine.

“Hey, one of my employees told me you were out here,” Grey said, coming to the table I frequented.

“I hope it’s okay that I stopped by the café today.”

He kissed my cheek, and even though I wish I felt something, I didn’t feel anything past friendship. “It’s always okay. Last night you didn’t seem like yourself and you mentioned you wanted to talk to me about something. Is that why you’re here?”

I nodded. “Yes, it is. Could we maybe talk in your office for privacy?”

“Sure thing.”

I quickly gathered my things and followed him to the back, dreading the conversation we needed to have. Grey was such a good guy, and I felt like an asshole for what I was about to say, but it needed to be said as cliché as, “It’s not you, it’s me,” sounded.

“What was that?” he asked, sitting on top of his desk.

I took a deep breath. “It’s not you, it’s me. I know we aren’t boyfriend and girlfriend or anything, but I don’t think we should date anymore. I really value our friendship though.”

Grey nodded. “I can’t pretend like I’m not disappointed to hear this, but I knew it was coming.”

My eyes widened. “You did? But how?”

“Cheyanne, you’re an amazing woman, and I knew when I asked you out that I wasn’t the only man interested.”

“I’m pretty dedicated to my job,” I explained. “Two weeks before the New Year is really the only time I take off, so I don’t actually have time to date much.”

“I remember you telling me that when we first met,” he said, his eyes studying mine. “But you and I both know that no matter how busy you are, you’ll always make time for your best friend.”

Nodding, I told him, “You’re right. Best friends are an exception to the rule.”

“I agree,” he said. “Last night was a lot of fun, but I noticed how you and Issac looked at each other. I noticed it before we even started dating, so I knew what I was getting into.”

“Yet you never asked me anything about him,” I pointed out. “I’ve been in past relationships where the guy I’m dating can’t help but ask me so many questions about my relationship with Issac. They get obsessed with it.”

“I’m a confident man and I don’t dwell on shit I can’t change. If you were feeling me, and I mean truly feeling me, Issac would be a moot point. But I’m not trippin’, Cheyanne. We were friends first and that won’t change.
